A Short History of the Silver Barber Dime

Barber Dimes, also known as Liberty Head dimes, were named and designed by Charles E. Barber, the Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint from 1879 to 1917. These silver Barber Dimes were produced from 1892 to 1916 and replaced the earlier Seated Liberty Dime. Many people looking for information on where to find a Liberty Head Dime are drawn in to the fact that Barber Dimes contain 90% silver. Due to the rise in market price for silver, there has been an increase in the intrinsic worth or melt value of this coin as well as others containing high percentages of silver. The highly desired Barber Dime features an image of Liberty on the obverse side wearing a Phrygian cap, a laurel wreath with a ribbon, and a headband with the inscription "LIBERTY", which is a key element in determining the condition of silver Barber Dimes.
