Who is Mary Kawena Puku? She is best know as an Hawaiian scholar, author, linguist, and hula expert. Her work was instrumental in preserving the Hawaiian language and culture. She is credited for co-authoring the Hawaiian-English Dictionary, still widely used today, documenting thousands of Hawaiian proverbs, chants, and oral histories, ensuring that they were passed down to future generations, and writing and translating over 50 books and articles about Hawaiian traditions, including hula, music, and mythology. Without her contributions it is very likely the Hawaiian language as we know it today, would have been largely lost.
Be sure to honor Mary Kawena Puku by adding the 2025 Native American Dollar to your coin collection from US State Quarters (usstatequarters.com).
